The Dogwood Diner in Dunsmir has excellent made from scratch food and is gluten-free friendly!

The Dogwood Diner in Dunsmuir CA!

Gluten sensitive people - You gotta love Oregon!  Even in small towns I've found people not only knowledgeable about gluten sensitivity but often packing some tasty gluten-free offerings it can be hard to find in California like gluten-free french toast and gluten-free pancakes.

On our last trip up to Oregon this past week we stopped in a little town just south of the CA-OR border, about halfway to our destination in Oregon, named Dunsmuir,  At the Dogwood Diner we experienced an exceptional breakfast that was also gluten-free!  It was such a welcome surprise to find a gluten friendly restaurant in this beautiful little mountain town. The are a "made from scratch" kitchen and know all the details of everything they put on their dishes.  I do not have celiac's so I don't know if they are celiac friendly but I did have the tastiest gluten-free french toast and my husband had some of the best corned beef hash he has had in a long time.

If you are in the area and hungry give them a try, you won't be disappointed!

Zest Bakery - A Highly Recommended Zest Gluten-Free Bakery in San Carlos, CA.

ZEST BAKERY - SAN CARLOS, CA

Everything I have had here has been just delicious, including the coffee and the staff has been just great.  This is a small, intimate and comfortable place with a few outside tables and a big picture window in the front where you can sit and sip coffee and have a muffin, cupcake, or brownie with your coffee and then take home a loaf of fresh gluten-free bread.  They even have almond milk and dairy free offerings for the gluten-free, dairy-free person.  Highly recommended.

All Spice in San Mateo on El Camino just north of Hwy. 92 is Highly Recommended

All spice is a small but very tasty indian fusion resturant that is very attentive to gluten issues.  Several of their servers have relatives with gluten problems themselves and they have some good menu choices for gluten sensitive patons.  Make reservations though as the place is small and can fill up quickly.  Highly Recommended.

Good Experiences at Oceanic Chinease in San Mateo on El Camino just south of Hwy. 92

We get take out from Oceanic regularly and I have never had a reaction from any of them.  They have many items on their menu that are gluten free and are very aware of food sensitivites and will help you choose an appropriate entrey. Their prices are good and service is usually very fast and reliable.  Highly recommended.

Good Experience at Unicorn Pan Asian Cusine in San Francisco

We were downtown looking for a place to eat and happened upon Unicorn on Pine Street just off of Market.  I was a little skeptical as many asian places are rife with soy sauce but we went in and talked with the staff who were not only very knowledgeable about gluten issues but said the chef could easily make modifications to many of the menu choices to accomodate special dietary needs.  It was definately a fine dining experience with prices to match but the quality of the food and preparation were very good and out waiter was very good with recommending what would work for me and what would not.  I did not have a reaction after my meal either so I would definately recommend Unicorn Pan Asian.

Great Experience at Narin Thai in Burlingame

I have been to Narin Thai on Park Road in Burlingame (across from the Post Office downtown) several times and each time our server was not only knowledgeable about which items in their menu might contain gluten but a good deal of their menu is actually gluten free, including many of their curries.  Their food is also downright tasty.  Highly recommended!

Bad Experience at Bow Thai Cafe in San Mateo

Bow Thai is a restaurant on B street in San Mateo that does a lot of take out business.  We ordered a curry over the phone for take out and I asked specifically about gluten in the curry or in any of the ingredients.  I was told there was none but I had a gluten reaction after eating the curry so that could not have been true.  I hate to say so but you can't trust these guys to tell you if there is gluten in their food.
